The Evanston History Center is a private, non-profit educational and cultural institution established in 1898 to preserve and share Evanston history. EHC collects, preserves and tells the story of Evanston's past through the Charles Gates Dawes House, interactive and engaging museum exhibits, research room and collections, educational programs, and book publishing.

Due to our ongoing lease negotiations with Northwestern University,

the Evanston History Center is closed for

tours and research as of Thursday, April 16, 2008.

Please call during regular business hours (Tuesday through Friday, 9-5 pm) with questions or concerns.

Tours of the Charles Gates Dawes House:
Friday - Sunday 1:00 - 4:30
Tours last approximately an hour and the last tour begins at 3:30
CLOSED MAJOR HOLIDAYS

Admission Fee:
Adults- $5; Senior Citizens- $3; Children, ages 6 to 18- $3;
Children under 6- free; Members- free

Frank B. Foster Research Room:
Tuesdays 10 am - 2 pm
Thursdays 1-4 pm
Saturdays 1-4 pm
CLOSED MAJOR HOLIDAYS

Admission Fee:
Daily use- $5; Evanston students under 18 with ID- free; Members- free

Current Exhibitions
Milestones and Memories: An Exhibit of Evanston History
Delve into the rich narrative of Evanston’s past from its early days as a stagecoach stop to its modern renaissance. This interactive exhibit spotlights many gems from the EHC collection – the town’s first post office, relics from an 1860 shipwreck, early firefighting equipment, antique Tinkertoys, an early movie theater ticket stand, and hundreds of historic photographs.
Open during regular museum hours, Friday-Sunday, 1 to 4:30 p.m. Included with Dawes House guided tour admission ($5 adult, $3 seniors/students) or $2 per person purchased separately.
