Researchers of every skill level and a wide variety of topics utilize the Evanston History Center research collections every year. Learn more about Evanston's heritage today during a visit to the Frank B. Foster Research Room, located on the basement level of the Dawes House.

The Evanston Historical Society's collections document the history and growth of the city of Evanston from the Native American times, to the period of the first settlers in the 1830s, through its incorporation in 1863, to the present. Approximately 3,500 artifacts, including everything from household items and business material to furniture and fine art, comprise the museum's artifact collection. Our exhibits and research are entirely dependant on these collections.

Glimpse the intriguing and complex lifestyles of late 19th and early 20th century suburban life on Evanston's lakefront; through the architectural masterpieces and internal operations of a turn-of-the-century household are revealed in the stories of these fascinating families, their domestic staffs, and their beautiful home.

The costume collection of the Evanston History Center contains over 10,000 artifacts ranging from evening gowns to golf shoes. Some elements of the Costume Collection were among the earliest artifacts donated to the Society. The garments in the collection help to give a closer understanding of the lives of Evanstonians, since clothes always reflect the cultures in which they are worn. The collection is housed on the third floor of the Charles Gates Dawes House.
