Charles Gates Dawes House
Volunteer Docent
Volunteering to docent at the Dawes House, home of the Evanston History Center, is an enjoyable and intriguing way to contribute to the Evanston community and be a part of the history of this lovely historic mansion on the lakefront. Anyone with an interest in Evanston, history, architecture, teaching or meeting new people would benefit from participating in this unique historical museum.
The Dawes house is a magnificent example of turn-of-the-century chateauesque architecture. It was home to Charles Gates Dawes, vice-president under Calvin Coolidge. Docents lead small tours through the 25 room home, showcasing the wonderful architectural details, examples of life in the 1920's, and the many facets of Gen. Dawes' fascinating and varied life. An exhibit of Evanston history is self-guided, as are the rotating exhibits.
We welcome people of all ages and interests to volunteer, from retirees to high-schoolers. Please call Kris Hartzell, Director of Visitor Services, at 847-475-3410, or email to Kris-Hartzell@northwestern.edu, for further information. Visit us during the hours we are open to the public, Friday-Sunday 1:00-4:00. We are located at 225 Greenwood Street in Evanston, 1 block East of Forest and 1 block South of Davis Street.
