Our tour begins in the East Parlor. This parlor would have been used by the Dawes family for formal entertaining. The parlor contains many family portraits, including those of Charles Gates and Caro Dawes, and their children, Rufus Fearing and Carolyn Dawes (seen here.) The Dawes also had two adopted children, Dana and Virginia. The East parlor is also used to exhibit the Society’s excellent collection of costumes from the 1850s to the present. This exhibit focuses on the various textures of these gorgeous garments.
