The grand staircase leads to the second floor, where up a small flight of stairs (to account for the barrel vault in the dining room), and down another, you enter the Nursery (formerly the Northwest Bedroom). This was used as a nursery for Dana and Virginia Dawes. The toys displayed in this room belonged to both the Dawes children and Caro Dawes.

The second floor also has a large bathroom, the son’s bedroom, used by Robert Loring Sheppard, then Rufus Fearing Dawes, and later by Dana Dawes. It is now the Historical Society’s Research Room. The Master bedroom is now used as exhibit space. The other bedrooms and dressing rooms now serve as office space.
